When to Seek Care

Signs Your Wound Needs Specialist Attention

If your wound is not improving or you have underlying conditions such as diabetes or poor circulation, early evaluation can help prevent infection, hospitalization, and amputation.

Symptoms Checklist

  • No improvement after 1–2 weeks of home care.
  • Redness, warmth, swelling, or streaking around the wound.
  • Drainage, odor, or change in wound color or size.
  • Pain worsening instead of improving.
  • You have diabetes, vascular disease, or neuropathy.
  • Fever, chills, or feeling unwell with an open wound.

Emergency: For severe bleeding, chest pain, trouble breathing, or life-threatening symptoms, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
